Carnival of Terror Obby Stage Difficulty Tier List
S–C ranks by death rate, time loss, and jumpscare panic — plus when a gamepass deletes the list.
This hub ranks stages, not PvP. Escape The Carnival of Terror Obby is PlatinumFalls’ free classic obby: up to 10 players per server, mild jumpscares, and checkpoints that reset if you leave. The list scores three things: how often a section kills a first-time runner, how much time a death costs because you replay a long stretch, and how badly a scare breaks your camera. There is no combat meta here.
Skip tools change the picture. If you own a Teleport Gun or a UFO, most of these ranks collapse. That debate lives on the Gamepass Tier List. This page assumes you are jumping the course on foot.
How we score a stage
Death rate is the obvious number. The boiler’s fire jets and red-glove hands delete you if you commit early. Doom Drop punishes mistimed steps more than raw jump height. Time loss is different: dying on the intro tracks costs seconds; dying in the plaza chase often dumps you before the Ferris wheel and burns a full restart loop. Jumpscare panic is the carnival’s extra tax. The listing warns of mild jumpscares. The Evil Clown’s plaza rush is the one that makes people spin the camera, miss a gap, and swear the stage is impossible when the route is a wide left or right cut.
We do not rank rides you sit on — once you are already in the seat — the same as parkour you have to thread. A Ferris cabin that auto-moves is C once you board it. Getting to that cabin while the clown is clapping is S.
Use the walkthrough when you want the route, the checkpoint map when you want the layout, and this page when you want to know which rooms deserve extra practice.
S-tier: clown chase and late Fun House
Clown chase. After the boiler you climb back to the plaza, hop a fence, and the music shifts. The Evil Clown runs you toward the Ferris wheel. There is no health bar and no stun window. You either reach a cabin or you die and retry the approach. Panic, not pixel precision, is the killer. Movement notes sit on beat the clown.
Late Fun House. After the volcano you re-enter through a giant clown head. Lasers, narrowing walls, a mirrored trap corridor, vanishing platforms, spinning laser walls, then a treadmill with blades that rise and fall. Deaths here stack because the rooms chain. One late jump on a disappearing pad sends you back through the same scare set. The funhouse page is the room-by-room version of this rank.
S-tier means this is where sessions end, not that the geometry is unfair. Both sections are readable once you slow the camera.
A-tier: boiler fire and Doom Drop
Boiler fire and hands (roughly checkpoints 3–9). Pipes vent instant-kill gas. Later, clown hands in red gloves punch from wall holes. You wait one cycle, then move. People who sprint die. People who wait too long also die because the next jet is already on a timer. High death rate, medium time loss if you already tagged the last pad.
Doom Drop timing. After the Ferris, Jim points you at the free-fall ride. The drop itself is a vehicle. The parkour around it is A because depth is hard to read. Third-person from the side helps more than a first-person panic zoom. A death here usually returns you to a nearby pad, so time loss is lower than the plaza chase even when the fail count looks ugly.
B-tier: volcano and roller coaster
Volcano speed fire. After a yellow portal you hit a classic obby with speed pads, a jump tower, then a fall into the volcano and back to the carnival. Fire plus momentum is the tax. It is fast, not confusing. Once you know which pad is a booster, deaths drop.
Roller coaster. The closer. You board, ride, and launch off the grounds. Most of the danger is the approach: laser treadmill, last gaps. The coaster ride itself is closer to C. We park the whole finale in B because a last-minute death feels worse than it scores.
C-tier and D-tier
C: intro tracks and the Ferris ride once you are on it. Stages 1–2 are lava rails after the turnstile. The clown-mouth gate looks mean; the jumps are tutorial. The Ferris cabin, after you sit, carries you. Do not jump out.
D: spawn plaza talking to Jim. You spawn at the toothy gate. Jim stands to the right with a green or blue balloon and explains the lock-in. Walking up to him cannot kill you. Read the line, then enter. This is the only stage that is conversation.
How gear warps the list
S-tier skip tools (Teleport Gun, UFO, Jet Pack) delete parkour ranks. A-tier coils and the grapple shrink A and B rooms. Combat toys — minigun, flamethrower, zombify, vacuum, shrink ray, dual blade — do not clear stages. They are Fun/F on the gamepass list. VIP at 2000 Robux is a convenience bundle for every toy, not a hidden S-rank for the obby itself.
If you care about a legit clear, ignore the shop until you can pass the plaza without spinning. If you only want a finish screenshot, skip tools are honest about what they are. Pair either choice with controls so camera and shift lock are not the real boss.
Practice order
- Spawn and Jim — D, just to learn the gate.
- Intro tracks — C, warm up jump timing.
- Boiler — A, learn wait-then-move.
- Clown chase — S, camera first.
- Doom Drop — A, side view.
- Volcano — B, commit to boosters.
- Fun House — S, do not rush vanishing pads.
- Coaster — B, finish.
Pair this order with getting started. Leaving the experience wipes pads, so pick one S-tier room per sitting if you only have ten minutes. Average playtime on the place is about 9.26 minutes, which is why so many visits never see the coaster.
When a rank feels wrong, it is usually panic, not a secret mechanic. Re-run the same checkpoint until the scare is boring, then move. For skip-versus-skill, open the Gamepass Tier List and decide before you spend Robux.
If a stage sits in S because it panics you, treat the next attempt as a camera drill, not a sprint. Count one full cycle of fire or lasers out loud, then jump. The ranks above will drop a letter once the scare is predictable — and that is the only way this list is meant to move.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common carnival questions.
How is this tier list ranked?
Death rate, time loss after a respawn, and jumpscare panic. It is a stage list for the obby, not a PvP ranking. Skip tools are scored separately on the Gamepass Tier List.
Why is the clown chase S-tier if the jumps look easy?
The geometry is readable. The restart cost and the scare are not. People spin the camera, miss the Ferris cabin, and replay the fence. See beat the clown.
Do gamepasses change these ranks?
Yes. Teleport Gun, UFO, and Jet Pack skip parkour. Coils and the grapple shrink A and B rooms. Combat toys do not clear stages. Full table on the gamepass list.
Is talking to Jim really D-tier?
Yes. The spawn plaza cannot kill you. Jim explains the lock-in and points you at the gate. The course starts after you leave him.
Should I buy VIP just to beat S-tier rooms?
Only if you want every toy in one purchase. VIP is a convenience bundle at 2000 Robux. A legit clear still comes from the walkthrough and camera control.
Where do I find the full route?
Stage-by-stage notes are on the walkthrough. The checkpoint map shows pad order. This hub only ranks how hard those pads feel.
